History of Main-Stage

Welcome to the archive of the Main Stage at Piven Theatre Workshop!

For over 50 years, Piven Theatre Workshop has maintained both a professional theatre and a nationally acclaimed actor training center for children and adults. The mission of Piven Theatre Workshop is to encourage a process of creative exploration that celebrates each individual’s unique voice through an ensemble-based, community-oriented approach to theatre training and performance.

Here you can explore our rich history of devised and staged work. Our history speaks to our long term commitment to celebrating new voices and producing work that is rooted in and responds to the needs of our community.

Productions at Piven are grounded in the traditions of story theatre and have a strong emphasis on the ensemble. Each season centers on a theme and is chosen after discussions with resident artists, teachers, students, and the community at large. All productions in that season will meditate on this theme.

Piven Theatre Workshop’s production wing is dedicated to continuing mentorship at the professional level. It is a valuable training ground for directors such as Eric Simonson, Jennifer Green, Robin Chaplik, Jessica Thebus and Polly Noonan. It is also an exemplary testing ground for new works by acclaimed playwrights such as Sarah Ruhl, Jennifer Barclay and Michael Stock.

Piven’s exceptional training and award- winning productions have created a community of incredibly successful alumni and has garnered the Workshop many awards. Alumni range from actors such as John Cusack, Joan Cusack, Kate Walsh, Jeremy Piven, Lili Taylor, Aidan Quinn, Ed Asner, Christian Stolte, Jeff McLane, Lecy Goranson, James Meredith, Nicholia Aguire, Rachel Brosnahan, Jacob Bond, Aayisha Ruby Gold, Harry Lennix, and Paul Adelstein to Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jeffrey Gettleman, MacArthur Genius Fellow playwright Sarah Ruhl, singer and composer Katarina Stanisavljevic, television producer Lyn Niemann, playwright Stephen Fedo, ETHS theatre director Tim Herbert, and activist and fundraiser Eilleen Russ Heltzer.

In this archive you will find photos and descriptions of our productions from over 50 years of dedicated theatre making. We are happy to celebrate the work of these artists and invite you to revisit the wonderful work on our stage over the years.

God Help Us!

Left vs Right! Conservative vs. Liberal! Red vs. Blue!

Maybe only the Lord can bring us together in this hilarious and insightful entertainment, where the debate gets hot and the passion gets hotter. GOD – legendary actor, Ed Asner – is a wise, cantankerous and wildly funny deity who confronts two political pundits with a romantic history: Lawrence (a liberal lad) and Leslie (a conservative gal). He is not at all pleased with our politics or what we’ve done to his Creation. GOD HELP US! speaks to audiences of all political persuasions with one essential argument: that we have to listen to each other so that we can all live – and laugh – together.
