Piven Theatre Workshop’s Performance Project Presents:
I AM MY NEIGHBORHOOD
World Premier adaptations of stories and folktales we all know and love within Piven’s thematic theatre framework.
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Directed by Gillian Hemme
In this exploration of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, we join Vivi, Necie, Caro, and Teensy in 1950s Louisiana as they tell their origin story. We find our four Ya-Yas in the woods, where we are invited to witness their elaborate initiation ceremony. Each girl forges unbreakable bonds that night – to her fellow Ya-Ya sisters and to her home in the bayou.
A Village of Fools, Directed by Liz Bell
A Jewish Folktale (loosely based on The Snow in Chelm) centers on a quirky village of fools, specifically The Elders. Our adaptation explores the unique characters that make up this village and how, time and time again, they come together to face challenges, inspire each other with new ideas, and celebrate their authentic community through play and imagination. One particular challenge leaves them stumped, but with the support of their village they refuse to give up.
The House on Mango Street, Directed by Donna Osowski
In selected vignettes from Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street, Esperanza Cordero’s ideas of who she is and what she wants for herself are influenced by her experiences and the Latino Chicago neighborhood that she lives in. Stories filled with hope, disappointment, joy and determination for who she will become.
